Day 2 - Manager Scavenger Hunt & Meeting

Officially onto day 2 of the internship and it started off with a manager scavenger hunt all across the campus. It ended up being really great because we met most of the different director's and manager's that we'll end up working with over the next few weeks and finding out which area's they run and what they do. So we started off in the Housing and Food Services office building, then we travelled all the way down to the far side of the campus to the National Weather Centre where Flying Cow Cafe is located. The building is incredible. Like, gorgeous. There are some pictures of outside down below. Kelsey and I were speaking with Dot today and I guess meteorology is one of the top programs here at the university since the weather in Oklahoma is so volatile. She was saying they've had tornados, hurricanes (tail ends of them), major hail storms, thunder/lightening, and even earthquakes. I cannot imagine living in a place where everything fluctuates so much, even in one day! For instances, today started off a little overcast but mostly sunny this morning, which changed to very overcast with light showers, then to a full on rain storm, then sunny, then back to heavy rain and it's still going strong.

We rode our bikes down to the weather centre and managed to miss all the rain which was great, however my bike decided to act up again changing gears on me and almost causing me several times to topple over, and I almost lost my shoe (three times). I swear these bikes are out to get me... Anyways we ended up making it back safely and got to check out Cate's Centre which is another building located on a different area of campus we hadn't been to. It's really nice (two pics below) and has several spots to eat at including Cucina Italiana, Taco Mayo, O'Henry's, Oliver's, and Roscoe's. So many places to choose from! Just to give you an idea of how many spots there are on campus, on the list we were given there were 23 different locations to eat at spread out over the campus including a gigantic meal hall and catering services. This doesn't even include the 46 concession locations they have in the sports stadiums! It's insane but quite an experience.

So afterwards we ate lunch at the Couch Restaurants, the big meal hall, right before the annual planning meeting we were attending with Shawn Henry who is the general manager and director of Couch Express and Xcetera, both located in the dormitory buildings. Xcetera (a convenience store) is undergoing renovations so we got to go in and check out all the changes being made. Iit should be done in July before we leave so hopefully we'll be able to see the final product! The meeting had several other people from H&FS and they went through a few different aspects of each location including sustainability, increasing revenue, decreasing costs, and marketing. It was about 2 hours and was really really interesting to see the process and have so many different points of view working on only two locations. I cannot believe the amount of work that goes into these projects and how many meetings each manager has with different vendors and other manager's within the same department. Kelsey and I even got to contribute a few ideas that they're going to use.

After the meeting we didn't do too much else, worked on our big project for the Flying Cow and got a ride home from Dot since the weather was still terrible. I think we're staying in and going to watch the OKC Thunder game tonight and relax. We're working with the guy in charge of C-Bord and Micros tomorrow so we'll see how that goes!

  2. Terry would so love being at the weather school... he always has an opinion about who is really right on predicting the weather.. either the radio people or the internet people... ugh.. I hear it every day.. .sounds like there.. you would be never wrong.. you could get up in the morning and say I think its going to rain (or thunder, or sunny, or windy) and you would be right.
I know I would want to eat in EVERY one of those spots to eat.. yummmm
